I work at a day job as a family law paralegal. While I can't give legal advice, I can give you a few pointers to watch out for:
1. Always make sure that whoever gets the marital bills - the other person's name is taken off - for both your protection!
2. If your spouse gets the house and mortgage, refuse to sign a quit claim deed to him / her until s/he refinances it out of your name.
3. Make sure an equitable distribution worksheet is done correctly. You will want your share of the assets and liabilities, and your spouse should have his / hers.
4. Make fair visitation schedules for the minor children - don't fight and argue - the secondary residential parent has as much right to be with the child as you do, and vice versa. It is in the best interest of the child(ren) that both parents are active in their lives.
I know that sounds trivial, but you would not believe the amount of fighting going on over the kids!! And mothers who will not let dads see the kids! Even though you can't get along with each other, in the best interest of the kids, you should at least be civil with each other at events that the child attends, so s/he/they can have both parents there, and NEVER argue at the exchange!
Those are the biggies If I think of any more biggies, I will post them.
