Have You Tried Brewing an Herbal Tea to Alleviate Symptom of Colds and Flu?
By Sandra Miracle
This time of year I think it is a great time to revisit the topic of "Herb Tea Gardens", Why?... because of course, I have a cold. Every October I come down with a cold. If I could figure out the exact cause of the relationship between the month of October and my propensity to "come down with a cold", I would avoid the situation that has me suffering at this very moment. A good guess would be that I teach children they go back to school in the fall and spread germs. You think?
Brewing Herbal teas has been covered before so please follow those instructions to brew herbal teas. Let's get down to specifics on the herbs to use to alleviate symptoms of colds and flu. At this very moment I am drinking a hot cup of steeped dried ginger root, a pinch of licorice root topped with a squirt of lemon (vitamin C!) and a bit of honey to help coat the throat. Ginger helps alleviate coughing, licorice root is an expectorant...and that is where I am at right now. Avoid using refined sugars in the home brewed tea; refine sugar tends to weaken the immune system. If you need to sweeten the tea, honey is an excellent choice plus it helps to soothe and coat the throat.
Listed below are some common herbs used to fight colds and flu. Use a combination of 2 to 3 herbs, about 1 teaspoon of the dried variety. After experimenting you will find the blend that best suits your symptoms and your taste buds. I am also not adverse to adding a shot of whiskey, brandy or your favorite spirit to a cup of tea before bed time.
Cough: Ginger root
Stuffy nose:Lavender
Expectorant - Congestion: Licorice root, Eucalyptus, Juniper Berries, Catnip, Thyme, Rosemary, and Chamomile
Upset Stomach: Catnip, Fennel, and Ginger
Fever: Peppermint, Sage, and Rosehips
Sore Throat: Slippery Elm, Licorice, Mallow root, and Anise
Herbal teas have been brewed for centuries to relieve symptoms of colds and flu.If your symptoms get worse, please go see your personal physician immediately. Here's to feeling better!
