5 Container Gardening Benefits
By Sam Windell
More people are learning about Container Gardening and wondering why they previously never tried it. The idea has been around for years, but only in last 10 or 20 years, has it seen more interest.
While Container Gardening is still not as popular as other gardening designs, many have embraced this worthwhile approach.
Here are 5 Benefits of Container Gardening:
1. Accessibility - Handicapped people can enjoy gardening with the easy accessibility they have to the plants when they are grown in a container. For those in a wheelchair, accessing the plants on a table, within reach, allows for garden care. For the elderly, container gardening is fantastic because it can make gardening chores easier than a traditional garden.
2. Mobility - One key use of this gardening is the opportunity to reposition the plants around with less effort. Consider when some bad weather arrives. You can quickly and easily move the plants back in the house. The mobility of container plants is a great asset. Also, what if the plants current location is not properly working? Simple, you can move it to another location and see if that location produces a better balance of sun.
3. Quality - Another good consideration for Container Gardening is soil quality. If your plant was grown in a container, it is less likely that the soil will have a disease. By using potting soil, it is generally a safer soil and disease free.
4. Feeding - Feeding your plants in a container is easier than feeding the outside soil. The close, smaller container can keep the food in the desired location. When using fertilizer, container gardening can also help in that the necessary fertilizer stays with your plants. You may still need to add fertilizer, however, mainly because the fertilizer is added to such a small area and may not sink in at first.
5. Extended Growing Season - Using a container to grow your plants can extend the plants growing season because the environment is more controlled. Your soil will be warmer when you insulate the containers, or pots. If you wrap the pots in towels or blankets to keep them insulated, your soil will be more conducive for good growth.
Keep in mind; these are only 5 benefits to Container Gardening. But, most of all is the lack of need for space. You might not have the larger area needed for a traditional garden, maybe you live in an apartment and don't have a big yard. Also, considering some people don't have the ability to manage a larger garden, then Container Gardening is a great option.
